2021-2022 Steelhead Winter Run Derby planning has begun!

With a potential La Niña rainy winter fast approaching, Nor-Cal Guides & Sportsmen’s Association (NCGASA) anglers have requested we start the Mad River Steelhead Derby (MRSD) earlier than January 1st for Derby #3. Several anglers from last year suggested the MRSD start in December 2021. We agreed Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021 might be a good weekend to start the Derby.

Anglers would be encouraged to register by Dec. 18 online and at RMI Outdoors in Eureka or online at ncgasa.org if we can get enough sponsors to start the Derby that early and if we can get the steelhead measurement metal rulers shipped up to Eureka in time for the start date.

This year NCGASA will use aluminum fish measuring rulers to measure hatchery steelhead entries with photos. NCGASA used soft measuring tapes in the last two Mad River Steelhead Derbies, but the accuracy of the measurements was not consistent. For MRSD #3, every angler will be required to measure their catches with a metal ruler provided by NCGASA. These rulers will be included as part of the Derby registration fees and anglers can either keep the rulers or return them after the event ends in order to save them for Derby #4. Rulers can be shared among anglers if needed.

MRSD looked for sponsors to put their company logo on these rulers to offset the cost of the rulers. MRSD sold a 4-color, 3 x 3 inch logo space on these rulers for $300.
